Bitrate describes how much data an encoded audio stream uses each second. A higher output bitrate can reduce additional compression loss, but it cannot restore information missing from the source.

Why 320kbps does not always mean better sound
Lossy audio has already discarded information. Re-encoding that stream at a larger bitrate changes the new file, not its history. If the source is approximately 128kbps, a 320kbps MP3 may be much larger while preserving essentially the same source detail.

When 128 or 192kbps is enough
Spoken-word audio usually needs less data than dense music. For lectures, interviews, and casual listening on phone speakers, 128 or 192kbps can be a sensible choice. It downloads faster and saves storage.
When 320kbps is useful
